Sopaipillas

Sopaipillas

I love Sopaipillas, they have always been my favorite part of a great Mexican meal in really good Mexican restaurants.

I love having them brought fresh and warm to the table. The aroma of the cooked flour of the light and airy pastry or bread is fabulous.

In the restaurants that I have had it, they usually served the sopaipillas with honey and powdered sugar. I think some restaurants would serve them with a shaker of a cinnamon and powdered sugar mix.

I would tear a corner of the fluffy, air filled, pastry and fill it with honey. Then a slight dusting of powdered sugar. It was like heaven!

Sopaipillas are prepared and served as a dessert or a bread in many central American countries and South American countries. As a dessert or pastry they are generally served as I described but are also made to go with meats and cheeses as well.

Some of the times in some of the South American countries sopaipillas are filled with meats and cheeses or they can be buttered or eaten with spicy sauces of all kinds.

Sopaipillas or sopapillas are fairly easy to make and have just a few basic ingredients. They are made as a quick bread with flour, baking powder, salt and milk, some shortening then deep fried.

The key is getting the dough to puff out. This may depend on the heat of the oil or working or kneading the dough too much which makes them tough or chewy as well. You will just have to experiment a few times until you get the perfect sopaipillas.

There are many online sites and a couple of videos that I included below that show how really easy this delicious pastry is to make.

As I mentioned above, some of South Americas cuisine use sopaipillas as a bread to fill with meat or cheeses or to eat with sauces, but I highly recommend eating them as a pastry and dessert with honey and maybe some cinnamon and powdered sugar.

I love the cooked sopaipillas sweet, flour taste and it goes so well with honey. I love them especially if they are fluffy but kind of crispy at places.

I hope you try making and eating these at home or order them at the next Mexican restaurant you go to. When I eat Mexican food, the sopaipillas for dessert are my tradition!
