The Hawaiian Sub
The Prototype
Imagine if you will, a bread like the panini style, that is toasted or grilled with garlic butter, generous helpings of Canadian bacon and ham, small, sparse chunks of pineapple, mozzarella cheese, black olives, and mushrooms, with a large ladle of mariner sauce, oops I mean Marinara sauce, my bad..
This is the Hawaiian Sub-preme
Its a fusion of Hawaiian Pizza and a Submarine Sandwich, and to the best of my knowledge, it doesn't exist, yet.
The Forerunners
The most common theories behind the submarine sandwich was that it was a product of the fusion of Italian and American cultures . It has its beginnings in the Italian American community in New York City, before or around World War II. Other theories are that it was from a Canadian food chain that brought about its infamy. Or that it was created near Naval Submarine bases on the east coast and was popular among sailors.
I did a little investigation on the Hawaiian pizza. Its purported to have been a German invention and or by the Panopoulos brothers (Greek?) in Ontario, Canada.
So its sounds like several cultures had their finger, so to speak, in that pizza pie, from the git go. Hawaiian style pizza is my favorite pizza and is the number one preferred pizza of choice in Australia.
The Lineage
I would like to have a panini or panera style Hawaiian sub, but also a version of the sub with a schlotzsky's-like bread as well. The panini style is from the Italian ciabatta bread, but toasted.
The schlotzky's style sandwich is made from the Sicilian muffelatta, which is a sesame bread. I would also like to have a french bread style version too, that's not toasted and that could possibly showcase the more vegetarian ingredients.
You could order the sandwich with an elongated, toasted or grilled Italian bread or maybe have the rounder Sicilian version with a toastier, garlicky bread. These two versions would have good amounts of cheese and Canadian bacon and tomato sauce.
The whiter, french roll style would be a softer, lighter version, with more olives, mushrooms, green peppers, onions and pineapple and less meats.
Well, there you have it. A fusion of fusions. This sandwich will have more cultures in it than a petri dish, but will be much better for you!
